FAQ
Why is it important to clip your dogs nails?
Long nails can make walking uncomfortable or even painful for dogs. Not only can overgrown nails lead to infections, but they can also affect your dog's posture and lead to long-term joint damage. It's good practice to get your dogs nails clipped regularly to help shorten their quicks over time and promote good health and comfort for your dog. We recommend to clip your dogs nails every 4 weeks.
What is a Paw Tidy?
Paw Tidy includes hair being carefully removed from the paw pads and between the toes with scissors or clippers, to prevent matting, improve grip on slippery surfaces, and maintain hygiene. Nail clipping is also included. This service helps to keep your house clean from muddy paw prints.
What is a Mini Tidy Package?
Our Mini Tidy Package includes a Paw Tidy (hair removal from paw pads and around the paw, plus nail clipping) and a Visor Trim (trimming the hair above the eyes to improve visibility). This is without a bath, and is breed specific. This package is designed to keep your dog's paws clean and their vision clear.
Anything extra that needs trimming or clipping will be classed as a Full Groom, as a dirty coat can blunt our blades, and prevent an even finish, so we will need to wash the dirty coat to be able to carry out the work and produce a nice finish.
Why is it important to clean your dogs ears?
Regular ear cleaning prevents the buildup of dirt, bacteria, and wax, which could potentially cause serious infections. Infections can be painful and can lead to hearing loss in severe cases. Breeds with floppy ears, like Cocker Spaniels, are particularly susceptible.
If you notice any discharge, or bad smells coming from your dogs ears, please contact your vet as this may be a sign of an ear infection that needs to be treated.
What is Ear Plucking and who is it for?
Ear plucking is a grooming technique specifically for dog breeds with excessive ear hair, like Poodles or Cocker Spaniels, aimed at preventing ear infections by removing hair that traps moisture and debris. Performed by professionals using tools and techniques, it improves air circulation in the ear canal and prevents excessive ear infections.
However, it's not suitable for all dogs, especially those with short ear hair or irritated ears, and should always be done gently to avoid causing pain or damage which is why you should have the procedure done by one of our professionals.
How do I know if my dog needs their Anal Glands expressed?
Knowing when your dog needs their anal glands expressed can be tricky, but there are some telltale signs to watch out for. Here's what to look for...
Common Signs:
-
Scooting: This is the most common sign. Your dog drags their rear end along the ground.
-
Excessive Licking or Biting: They may focus on licking or biting around their anal area.
-
Strong, Unpleasant Odor: A distinct, fishy or metallic smell emanating from their rear end.
-
Discomfort or Pain: They might show signs of discomfort when sitting or defecating.
-
Straining or Difficulty Defecating: They may strain or have trouble passing stool.
-
Swelling or Redness: You might notice swelling or redness around the anal area.
-
Frequent Chewing or chasing their tail: Whilst this is normal behaviour, if this is combined with any of the above symptoms, it could indicate that they are trying to reach the irritated area.
Why Anal Glands Need Expressing:
-
Anal glands are small sacs located on either side of a dog's anus.
-
They produce a foul-smelling fluid that's normally expressed during bowel movements.
-
Sometimes, these glands don't empty properly, leading to buildup, impaction, or infection.
What is a Visor Trim?
A Visor Trim is a dog grooming technique focused on carefully trimming the hair above a dog's eyes, creating a clean "visor" effect to improve visibility. Primarily used on breeds with long facial hair, like Poodles or Shih Tzus, it involves using scissors to create an even line, ensuring the dog's comfort and safety while enhancing their appearance.
