About Hand Stripping

Hand Stripping is a method of grooming that preserves the natural look and health of a dog's wiry coat, by removing the dead outer layer of hair. Hand Stripping is a specialised grooming technique that involves manually removing the dead, outer coat of a dog's fur, rather than clipping it with clippers. Although we highly advise against having a bath after the Hand Strip, our price includes a bath and a blow dry at the time of the appointment as well as Nail Clip and Ear Cleaning.

The purpose of Hand Stripping:

  • It maintains the natural texture and colour of certain dog breeds' coats, particularly those with wiry hair.

  • It promotes healthy coat growth by removing dead hair, allowing new hair to grow in.

  • It helps to prevent skin problems that can arise from clogged hair follicles.

How it's done:

  • We use assisted tools like stripping knives or stones, to pluck the dead hairs from the dog's coat.

  • It's done by pulling the hair in the direction of growth.

Which breeds benefit:

  • Primarily wiry-haired breeds, such as many terriers (e.g, Wire Fox Terriers, Border Terriers, West Highland Terriers), Schnauzers, Cocker Spaniels and some other breeds.

Why it's important:

  • Clipping wiry coats can soften the texture and dull the colour, whereas hand stripping preserves the coat's natural characteristics.

  • It's often essential for maintaining breed standards in show dogs.

Things to Consider:

  • Temperament: Hand stripping can take time, and your dog needs to tolerate the process.

  • Skin Condition: Dogs with skin conditions may not be suitable for hand stripping.

  • Age: As a dog gets older, their coat will change and may not be strippable. We also should keep in mind whether your dog can stand for a long period.

  • If your dog's coat has been regularly clipped, it may become too soft and unsuitable for hand stripping. Clipping changes the coat's texture over time.

  • If your dog has been neutered, your dogs coat may no longer be strippable due to hormonal changes. Sometimes this may affect the texture of the coat.

FAQ

How do I know if my dog can be Hand Stripped?

Determining if your dog can be hand stripped primarily depends on their breed and coat type. The most common breeds that benefit from hand stripping are those with wiry or rough-textured coats.

Signs Your Dog's Coat is Ready for Stripping:

  • Dead Hair: You may notice dead, dull hairs sticking out from the coat.

  • Loose Hair: When you gently pull on the hair, it should come out easily.

  • Dull Colour: The coat may look dull or faded.

We offer free consultations for us to assess your dogs coat and give our recommended advise.

Can my dog have a bath with their Hand Stripping appointment?

Generally, it's not recommended to bathe your dog immediately before or after a hand stripping appointment. Here's why:

Before Hand Stripping:

  • Dirty Coat is Easier to Grip: A slightly dirty coat (not matted) actually makes it easier for the groomer to grip the hairs and pull them out. The natural oils and dirt provide better traction.

  • Avoid Softening the Coat: Bathing can soften the coat, making it more difficult to strip and potentially causing discomfort for the dog.

After Hand Stripping:

  • Open Pores: Hand stripping opens the hair follicles, leaving the pores exposed. Bathing immediately after can introduce irritants or bacteria, potentially leading to skin irritation or infection.

  • Skin Sensitivity: The skin can be more sensitive after hand stripping.

If you would your dog to be bathed, we would advise to wait 48h after however if a bath is absolutely necessary after hand stripping, an antibacterial shampoo with cool water will be used to prevent irritation however this is not guaranteed  to prevent the risks and we will not be held liable. You will be asked to sign a waiver. A bath and blow dry is included in the service and you will be charged by the hourly rate.
